Liuhe Night Market (Kaohsiung)

This place is really accessible - 3 minutes walking distance from Formosa Boulevard Station 捷運美麗島站. It was once voted as the number 1 night market in Taiwan. Some say it has lost its lustre over the years though. It has mainly food but not much to shop for. Perhaps this is where it loses out compared to other night markets like Shilin and Raohe, where you can do pretty much both. Here are some of the food my friends and I tried, based on tour guide books and our own liking. I will indicate which are must-trys in the captions!

Beef/chicken "pie". Rather crispy on the outside!
Try!!

Papaya milk stall. President Ma came to this stall before. The drink is really thick and milky.

Look out for this man who seats behind his stall to do his cooking, looking all relaxed and happy.

Sells all sorts of BBQ meats. Must-try!

In Kaohsiung, their lurou rice 滷肉飯 comes in a big slab of fatty meat, whereas the above is actually called Zaorou  rice 燥肉飯.

Shida Night Market

This night market is located about 10 minutes' walk from Taipower Station Exit 3. Exact directions below. It is right beside National Taiwan Normal University so expect a decent crowd any night you go there. Weekends will be super packed and if eating and shopping along narrow alleys aren't quite your thing, you might not find this place appealing. Otherwise, I must say there are a few awesome stalls and bargains you can find.

You can find all sorts of food here.. Korean for example.

One of my favourite stalls here.

Choose from a huge variety of food

Look out for this cool and calm looking aunty. She's there ALL the time!

It is one of the more popular stalls in Shida

Simply love the sauce mixture

Another Lu-wei stall that made its way into some travel guide books

Ice shavings Stall

Po-Lou Bun. I've seen queues of about 100 people before.
